Out on a limb

So, let me apologize. This is kind of awkward. Bonnie and I said we would be posting, keeping people posted, staying up to date on posts. We've done nothing of the sort. We got busy and pretty much forgot. That can be good in some ways, but bad if you read this blog at all.

The subject of my first post in four months is, once again, my career. I've learned a little bit in the time I've spent in and out of the trenches here in the city. Some of it is enlightening, inspiring, enriching...some of it desperate, lonely and futile.

I had a goal that by Christmas I would have at least ONE New York credit on my resume. Well, now I've got three. I was in a video that was in a show called "Acedia" at Theatrelab on 14th St, I was in a Columbia MFA Directing show called "Tea Party" by Harold Pinter and now I'm in tech-soon-to-be-performances of Sean Graney's "These Seven Sicknesses" at the Flea Theater, downtown. And I'm having a wonderful time. So far, I've not really done anything that was a waste of my time and the people I've worked with have been tremendous and helpful and uplifting--some of the most talented people I've ever worked with and the smartest too.

I've also made tremendous industry connections and reconnections. I've met several actors who are involved in the kind of work I want to have in my career--off broadway, broadway, experimental and non-traditional staging. They have been immensely gracious and kind and open to conversations and advice, which has been huge. So, with a little bit of hustle and a lot of luck I've made a dent in the beginning of my career.

But I'm going out on a limb now, doing something I hadn't anticipated. I've quit my part time job at Apple. They've been great, working around my crazy schedule, but they can't make the same concessions they had and I don't blame them. At this point, I'm not making too terribly much working there. I can spend the hours I would be working advancing my career or spending quality time with my wife when she's not working--the weekends.

I've set this aside as a goal for myself, so that it's not an idle gesture. I want to capitalize on the time I'll be getting. My new years resolution was to get paid to act in 2012. I'm also looking at trying to connect with voice and vocal teachers to find out how one begins to teach voice in the city. Almost all of my career experience has been with teaching and I would love to get back in a classroom.

Hopefully 2012 will not only bring our first anniversary in the city, but surprises with my careers and Bonnie's too. There will be more updates, I can promise you that!
